William (Billy) Kappen, M.A., AMFT
William Kappen is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT #157719) based in Westlake Village, California. He works with adolescents (13+), individuals, and couples who are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected and are seeking deeper emotional healing and more secure, meaningful relationships.
His work is grounded in attachment theory and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a well-researched, evidence-based approach for couples and individuals. EFT helps people understand the emotional patterns and attachment needs that shape how they relate to themselves and to one another. In therapy, William helps clients slow down and look beneath the surface—beneath conflict, distance, anxiety, or emotional shutdown—so that new, safer ways of connecting can emerge.
William has advanced training in both Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) and Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT). With couples, he supports partners in moving out of painful relational cycles and into patterns of greater emotional accessibility, responsiveness, and engagement. This work focuses on repairing attachment injuries, rebuilding trust, and strengthening emotional connection in ways that are structured,
collaborative, and deeply human. He integrates Brainspotting, a somatic and neurobiological trauma therapy, to help clients process experiences that may be stored in the nervous system rather than in words alone. William is also trained in the Minwalla Model for Deceptive Sexuality and Trauma Treatment (DSTT), which allows him to work carefully and responsibly with individuals and couples impacted by deception, betrayal, and relational trauma. This work emphasizes emotional safety, accountability, transparency, and trauma-informed healing for both partners.
William works with clients navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, attachment wounds, betrayal trauma, relationship challenges, shame, identity concerns, and spiritual or faith-related struggles. He welcomes clients of all faiths, genders, and sexual orientations, and is committed to providing care that is respectful, affirming, and emotionally safe. For clients who desire it, he can thoughtfully integrate faith and spirituality into the therapeutic process, including Christian-informed counseling.
William strives to create a therapeutic relationship that feels grounded, respectful, and emotionally safe—one where clients feel supported as they move toward healing, clarity, and connection.
He is supervised by Sandra Jocoy, LMFT (License #82959).
